The WVLC is designed to enhance the capacities of developing nations to plan and implement sustainable national water strategies at local, sub-regional and basin levels. The WVLC does so through a core curriculum on IWRM, which offers opportunities for continuing education and the upgrading of professional skills in the water sector. The curriculum offers broad-based coverage of the principles and practice of IWRM, focusing on core knowledge in the natural sciences, engineering, health, governance, social sciences, public administration, economics, resource conservation, and strategic planning, as well as aspects of programme and project management.

This is a multidisciplinary research project that endeavors to screen a number of plants that are traditionally used to treat HIV associated opportunistic fungal infections by communities living in the Lake Victoria Basin of Kenya. Upon the identification of effective plants, the focus is to develop methods for local processing and packaging of value-added herbal products. Participatory rural appraisal (PRA) methods and structured interviews are used to collect indigenous knowledge to be used for identification and selection of anti-fungal medicinal plants.

Having recognized their common concerns and interests, the Nile riparian countries established in 1999 the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) whose vision is "to achieve sustainable socio-economic development through the equitable utilization of, and benefit from, the common Nile Basin water resources." To translate this shared vision into action, the NBI launched a Strategic Action Program which includes two complementary components: a basin-wide Shared Vision Program (SVP) and Subsidiary Action Programs (SAPs). The Applied Training Project is one of the thematic projects to be implemented basin-wide to help establish a foundation for trans-boundary regional cooperation and create an enabling environment conducive to investments and action on ground within an agreed basin-wide framework.
