Conducting research to the highest international scientific and ethical standards to improve the health of the people of Kenya. The Centre of Geographical Medicine Research Coast (CGMRC) is one of the ten centres of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). It is home to the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme and is well known internationally for its work tackling malaria and other infectious diseases, particularly bacterial and viral childhood infections.

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) was established in 1979 under the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of that year to represent the national body responsible for carrying out health science research in Kenya.

EACCR is a partnership of about 30 research and academic institutions in five East African countries (Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, and Ethiopia) and five European countries (United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, and Norway). It is sponsored by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the Netherlands-African partnership for Capacity development & Clinical interventions Against Poverty (NACCAP), Medical Research Council (MRC)-UK and other development partners. This Network of Excellence is expected to contribute to accelerated discovery of new or better drugs, vaccines and interventions to control the targeted diseases in East Africa.
