Muhimbili University

The School of Public Health and Social Sciences (SPHSS) is one of five schools within Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). The School came into being after the amalgamation of the former Institute of Public Health, the Institute of Developmental Studies and the institute of Primary Health Care and Continuing Education in accordance with the collective promotion of these Institutes to university status. The Institute of Public Health however dates back to July 1991 when it was established after the then faculty of medicine was upgraded into a college. Currently the SPHSS has six departments: Behavioural Sciences; Community Health; Development Studies; Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Parasitology and Medical Entomology; and Environmental and Occupational Health

This institution was established in July 1974 as Department of Pharmacy in Faculty of Medicine with assistance of a grant from British council. Since then we have been producing quality pharmacists who are now the backbone of the Health care system in Tanzania and a few neighboring countries.

The School of Nursing evolved from the Faculty of Nursing that was established with the birth of Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences in 1991 under the ACT No. 10 (1) C. of 1991. The Faculty of Nursing emerged from the Nursing Education Department which was responsible for the three schools of nursing at the by then Muhimbili Medical Centre i.e.; School of Nurse Teachers, School of Nursing and the School of Public Health Nursing. . The department was accorded academic status in 1988 under the Faculty of Medicine to be responsible for running the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc. N) programme. The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is a successor to the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS), which was a constituent College of the University of Dar es Salaam.

The School of Medicine started as the Dar es Salaam School of Medicine in 1963 with initial intake of eight students. In 1968, the school was upgraded to a Faculty of Medicine of the Dar es Salaam University College, which was a constitutient College of the University of East Africa. ...

The current gap between the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDFs) and the state of health indicators in East Africa warns of an impending public health failure and is evidence of the need for a stronger public health workforce. The Leadership Initiative for Public Health in East Africa (LIPHEA) is, therefore, strategically positioned to contribute to the process of building a competent and committed generation of public health professionals. The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of Makerere University School of Public Health (MUSPH) and Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) to not only provide effective public health leadership for Uganda and Tanzania, but also to catalyze the training of public health leaders in the whole region.
