A Wellcome Trust-funded consortium that brings together 6 universities and 3 research Institutes (7 in East Africa and 2 in UK), with the aim of building capacity in East Africa for health sciences research.

Home Page for the Makerere University/UVRI Infection and Immunity Research Training Program - In association with the LSHTM and Cambridge University, this Program was initiated to help East Africans pursue a research career in Infection and Immunity, focusing on endemic diseases of the region. There is a huge infectious disease burden in sub-Saharan Africa, and a real shortage of highly trained East Africans available to tackle and help solve the problems faced in overcoming this challenge.

The MRC/UVRI Uganda research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Ugandan Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV(human immunodeficiency virus) infection and AIDS(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The Unit is an institution of the UK Medical Research Council(MRC), integrated into the Uganda Virus Research Institute(UVRI).

The Joint Clinical Research Center (JCRC) was founded in 1991 to serve as a national AIDS research center, and was born as a collaboration between Makerere University's School of Medicine and Uganda's Ministries of Health and Defense.

EACCR is a partnership of about 30 research and academic institutions in five East African countries (Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, and Ethiopia) and five European countries (United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, and Norway). It is sponsored by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the Netherlands-African partnership for Capacity development & Clinical interventions Against Poverty (NACCAP), Medical Research Council (MRC)-UK and other development partners. This Network of Excellence is expected to contribute to accelerated discovery of new or better drugs, vaccines and interventions to control the targeted diseases in East Africa.
