Foxit Reader, currently version 7 is a small, but fast and secure, free viewer, that allows you to open and edit PDF documents. It is a very good alternative to Adobe Reader.
It is quite fast at opening even large PDF docs, taking just seconds and additional tools allow making comments, selection and striking through sections of text.
During installation, you may install the Word, PowerPoint & Excel plugins, which allow you to convert those documents to PDF directly from their respective interfaces.
Furthermore, I personally make sure Foxit Reader in the next window is set to be the default PDF Viewer.
If you you enable it as the default printer, then once you want to print a document, it will be printed by the program as PDF. This makes sense only if you have no external printer installed and physically connected to PC, otherwise it is offered by Windows as one of the printer options.
Foxit PhantomPDF Standard (with more functions) is offered as a free 30-day trial, but unless you really want this, select the non-install option. The free download is sufficient for most people.
Just in case other additional, unrelated software is offered, like toolbars, etc, just do not select it.
