How do I submit a  website to  the directory?

  1. Before submitting your EAST AFRICA-RELATED (MUST be related to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, South Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros & Zimbabwe) website, you need to register. This takes just a few moments, but helps a lot to avoid automated spam entries. Registration form link is on the right. You will need to activate your account via a link sent to the registration email.
  2. Log in.  Keep your login information for future submissions and updates.
  3. Habari Search already has thousands of sites, possibly including yours. Do a search to be sure it is not already there. If you are sure it is not there, go on to the next step. There are 2 ways to do this.
  4. Go to the homepage and navigate through the categories and subcategories by clicking (+) buttons to the one most appropriate for your site and select it. For example, if you want to submit a Ugandan primary school website, go to Uganda => Education and Reference => Primary Schools. Once there, click the Suggest listing/Site link (page top). This will take you to the form, which on completion will suggest your link for that specific category. The root or frontpage category is locked.
  5. IMPORTANT: the page elements, including the categories & submission form may take a few moments to load. Please be patient.
  6. Alternatively, from your account area, click on the "Suggest listing/site" link up the page OR go to "My listings" => "Click here to add one", just under "My listings" heading.
  7. Fill in as much relevant information as you need. This will help users find or locate your business more easily. Irrelevant spam-like entries will be edited or deleted.
  8. If you are not sure about specific text fields, there are hints accessible by clicking on the corresponding blue icon with a question mark. Simply hold the mouse over it and you will get a hint.
  9. You will be urged to re-check your entry before final submission.
  10. Once you submit, the administrator will look at the link and if approved, you will be informed by email.

How do I ensure that my website is accepted?

We do not guarantee acceptance of any site that is submitted. Sites that do not conform to our Terms of service will not be accepted. Depending on the volume of work, if your site is accepted, it will be visible between 1 - 7 days.

Please take the time to place your site in the most appropriate category/sub-category. If it is not included, feel free to suggest one.

Can I submit websites that are not directly related to East Africa?

Sites that are directly related to the East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, South Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros & Zimbabwe will be accepted as long as they meet other criteria. All other sites will not be approved.

My site or a site I know has outdated or incorrect information. What can I do to get it corrected?

  • If you registered the site yourself, simply log in using your registration data and update it yourself.
  • If you did not register it yourself, contact us via the contact form mentioning the concerned website's address and describe the problem. The site will be updated as long as there is up-to-date information on the site. A long term solution would be to request the site to be linked to you so you can update it yourself.
  • Even if you have nothing to do with a particular site but notice it has outdated information, you could help and report it to us, mentioning the website address.

How does one correctly use Google maps, so the correct location of my business (etc) is shown?

Google provides a powerful tool that can be used to help potential customers & other people locate your business or organisation's premises.

Google maps can be used to show the exact physical location, etc under 2 important conditions:

  • your address is already in the Gmaps database
  • you enter the address data in the correct format, that Gmaps understands

In western countries, if you enter the street number, location, zip code & country, the pointer will be on the exact location. In many African countries, the use of street addresses is not used that much or is just developing and Gmaps does not always have enough information to point to your business' location, but there is a way if you follow the steps outlined below:

  • Log in to your account, in case you submitted the site yourself. If not, contact us and we will create an account & associate it to your already submitted site.
  • Go to "My Listings" link. Click the "Edit" button (beside Details)
  • Make sure some location details, including Country & City/Location are filled in. The latter are important, but must be in the Google Map database, otherwise this will not help.
  • After the listing fields load, which may take a few moments, look for the "Select coordinates" link, beside the "City/Location" text field & click it.
  • In the opening window, look for the red Google map location pointer, place the mouse over it, hold the left button down & drag & drop it to the correct location. ALTERNATIVELY, NAVIGATE TO THE RIGHT LOCATION/STREET ADDRESS ON THE MAP & DOUBLE CLICK IT, which will automatically place the pointer correctly. You may need to play around with the map, changing the zoom value by clicking the + & -, shift it around. The Gmap is "drag-able". Set the zoom to what shows your location best, with respect to the surrounding roads.
  • If satisfied, close the window & SAVE by clicking the "Edit Listing" button. You can always come back to fine-tune.
